Small Business Marketing Guides | South Africa

WhatsApp, Google Business Profile, reviews and the handful of channels that bring paying customers without an ad budget.

South Africa markets differently to almost anywhere else, and most marketing advice ignores it entirely. We have one of the highest WhatsApp penetration rates in the world. Data is expensive enough that people think before they load a page. Trust is built through referral and through the map pack, not through display ads.

These guides are about the channels that actually produce enquiries here, for businesses without a marketing department.

WhatsApp is the sales channel, not a chat app

For most South African small businesses, WhatsApp is where the deal is actually closed. A click-to-chat button with a pre-filled message typically produces more enquiries than every other element on a website combined, because it removes the two things people hate: composing an email and waiting for a reply. The guides here cover setting up WhatsApp Business properly, writing the pre-filled messages, using catalogues and quick replies, and knowing when the paid API is a waste of money for a business your size.

Your Google Business Profile is your second website

For local searches the map results appear above everything else. A profile with the right categories, real photographs, correct hours and a steady trickle of reviews will bring in calls whether or not anyone ever reaches your homepage. It is free, it takes an afternoon to do properly, and most of your competition has filled in half of it and stopped.

Reviews are the whole ballgame

Asking for reviews feels awkward and almost nobody does it consistently, which is exactly why it works. A business with 40 recent reviews beats one with 6 in both ranking and in the decision the customer makes after they read them. The guides cover how to ask without being irritating, what to do about a bad one, and why replying to reviews matters more than the star average.

What is usually not worth it

Paid ads before your organic and map presence are sorted. Posting daily to a social account your customers do not use. Anything sold to you as a package with no explanation of what it does. If you cannot draw a line from the spend to an enquiry, it is a hobby.
