When someone searches “electrician near me” or “coffee shop Sandton”, the first thing they see is usually not a website — it is a row of Google Business Profiles with a map. This free tool puts your business there, and most South African small businesses still have not set it up.
What Google Business Profile Does
- Shows your business on Google Maps when customers search nearby
- Displays your phone number, address, hours and website directly in search results
- Collects Google reviews — the most trusted review platform in South Africa
- Shows photos of your business, products or services in search
- Gives you free insight into how customers are finding you
How to Set It Up in 10 Minutes
Go to business.google.com, click “Manage now”, and follow the prompts. You will need to verify the business — Google usually posts a card with a code to your address, though phone, email or video verification is available for some business types. Once verified, fill in every field as completely as you can and add real photographs.
The Part Most People Get Wrong
Setting it up is easy. Ranking in the local pack — the three results Google shows above everything else — takes a bit more. Three things move the needle most:
- Category accuracy. Pick the most specific primary category that fits. “Hair salon” beats “beauty salon” if that is what you actually are. Add secondary categories for everything else you do.
- NAP consistency. Your Name, Address and Phone number must match exactly everywhere they appear — your website, your Facebook page, every directory. Google treats inconsistencies as a signal that it cannot trust your details.
- Reviews, steadily. Ten reviews collected over ten months beats forty collected in one week, which looks manufactured. Ask every satisfied customer, and reply to every review you get.
Do You Need a Physical Address?
A common worry for home-based and remote South African businesses. You can register as a service-area business, which lets you hide your street address while still listing the towns and cities you serve. You still need a real address for verification, but it does not have to be shown publicly.
Link It to Your Website
A Business Profile works far better when it points at a real website with matching details and local content. The profile earns the visibility; the website earns the trust and does the converting. If your site is not there yet, start with why your business needs one, then read how to rank on Google in South Africa for the broader picture.
Photos Do More Work Than People Expect
Profiles with genuine photographs get noticeably more engagement than those without. Add your storefront or work vehicle, your team, finished work, and your logo. Update them occasionally — Google treats an active profile as a live business, and a profile whose last photo is four years old sends the opposite signal.
Avoid stock imagery entirely here. Customers can tell, and it undermines exactly the credibility the profile is meant to build.
Use Google Posts
You can publish short updates, offers and event notices directly to your profile. They appear in search results and keep the listing looking current. A short post once a fortnight is plenty, and takes about two minutes.
Handling Reviews — Including Bad Ones
Reply to every review, positive or negative. For a poor review, the reply is not really for the reviewer; it is for the next fifty people who read it. A calm, specific response that acknowledges the issue and offers to resolve it does more for your reputation than a perfect five-star average with no replies.
Never buy reviews. Google is good at detecting them, and the penalty ranges from removing them to suspending the profile.
Keep It Consistent With Your Website
Your business name, address and phone number should be byte-for-byte identical on your profile, your website footer, and every directory listing. “Shop 4, 12 Smith St” and “12 Smith Street, Shop 4” look the same to you and different to Google. Inconsistency here is one of the most common reasons small businesses underperform in local search.
Common Questions
I work from home. Can I still list?
Yes — register as a service-area business, which hides your street address while listing the areas you serve.
How long until it shows up?
Usually within days of verification, though competitive local pack positions take longer and depend on reviews, category accuracy and the strength of your overall SEO.
