We build WordPress sites. You should read this knowing that, and you should also know that we regularly tell people Wix is the better choice for them. Both are true, and the honest comparison is more useful than a sales pitch.
What Wix is genuinely better at
Getting something live tomorrow, alone. If you need a website this week, have no budget for help and no technical confidence, Wix will get you there. Drag, drop, publish. That is a real advantage and it should not be dismissed.
Nothing to maintain. No updates, no plugins to conflict, no security patches, no backups to configure. Wix handles all of it. For a business that will never touch the site again, that removes a genuine category of problem.
One predictable bill. Hosting, domain, SSL, support, all in one monthly figure. No separate host, no surprises.
If you are a one-person operation who needs a simple presence and will never invest further, Wix is a defensible choice and we would rather you had a Wix site than no site.
Where WordPress wins
You own it. This is the big one. A WordPress site is files and a database that belong to you. You can move it to any host, hand it to any developer, export all of it. A Wix site cannot be exported - if you outgrow Wix or their pricing changes, you rebuild from scratch and lose your search rankings in the process.
That is a real risk, not a theoretical one. We have rebuilt several Wix sites for businesses that hit a wall.
It can do more, later. A booking system, a searchable catalogue, a quote calculator, a members area, a proper shop. WordPress can grow into all of it. Wix can do some, less well, within its own limits.
SEO control. Wix's SEO has improved considerably and the old "Wix is terrible for Google" line is outdated. But WordPress still gives more control - over URLs, schema, page speed, and how the site is structured. For a business competing hard in local search, that margin matters.
Speed. Wix sites are generally heavier. On South African mobile data that shows, and page speed affects both rankings and whether people wait.
Cost over time. Wix is cheaper in year one and often more expensive by year three, because the monthly fee never stops and rises with the features you need. WordPress has a higher upfront cost and low running costs.
The thing people get wrong about cost
The comparison is usually framed as "Wix is cheap, WordPress is expensive". That is only true if you compare a DIY Wix site to a professionally built WordPress site - which is comparing your time to someone else's.
The honest version: DIY Wix is cheapest. DIY WordPress is cheap but has a real learning curve. Professionally built WordPress costs more upfront and gives you an asset you own. A professionally built Wix site costs almost as much as WordPress and gives you something you cannot take with you, which is the worst of both.

How to actually choose
Choose Wix if: you are building it yourself, you need it live within days, the site is genuinely simple, and you are comfortable that it stays inside Wix permanently.
Choose WordPress if: you are paying someone to build it, you want to own the asset, you expect to add functionality, you compete in local search, or you have any intention of growing.
For most established South African small businesses with real customers and real competition, that lands on WordPress. For someone testing an idea with no budget, Wix is fine.
What about Squarespace and Shopify?
Squarespace sits close to Wix - better design, same lock-in trade-off, similar reasoning applies.
Shopify is a different question entirely because it is built for selling. If your business is primarily an online shop, that comparison is Shopify versus WooCommerce, not this one.
If you are already on Wix
Do not move for the sake of it. If your Wix site works, brings enquiries and does not frustrate you, leave it and spend the money on your Google Business Profile and reviews instead - that will do more for you than a platform change.
Move when you hit an actual wall: you need something Wix cannot do, the site is too slow, or you are losing to competitors in search and have exhausted the other fixes.
And when you do move, budget for content migration and redirects. Moving badly loses everything you built up.
