This question comes up in almost every conversation we have with a South African business owner, and the answer is more reassuring than most people expect.
Load shedding does not take your website offline.
Your website does not live in your shop, your office or your home. It lives in a data centre, and data centres are built specifically for this. They run on utility power with battery backup that carries the load instantly when the grid drops, and diesel generators that take over within seconds and can run for days. Staying up through a power failure is the entire product they sell.
So when Stage 4 hits your suburb, your website carries on serving customers exactly as before. Your competitor's does too. Nobody browsing from another area even knows.
What does go down
The disruption is real, it is just not where people assume.
Your phone and your ability to respond. Your handset has a battery, but the cell tower serving you may not - tower backup batteries are a well-known target for theft, and coverage degrades in extended outages. Customers get through less reliably, and you may not see enquiries for hours.
Your card machine and till. Point-of-sale systems, card terminals and anything needing your shop's wifi stop.
Your own access to the internet. Fibre routers need power. Fibre itself usually keeps running, but the box in your house does not.
Your ability to update anything. The site stays up; you just cannot change it.
What this means for how your website is built
The practical conclusion is not about the website's uptime. It is that your website has to work harder during outages, because it is the only part of your business still running.
That changes a few priorities:
- Everything important must be on the page. Prices, hours, what you sell, where you are, how to reach you. If a customer cannot phone you, the site has to answer their question alone.
- Asynchronous contact beats synchronous. A WhatsApp message or a form submission waits patiently for you; a missed call does not. A form that captures the enquiry properly means nothing is lost while you are dark.
- Speed matters more. Visitors on degraded mobile networks during load shedding are on slow, congested connections. A heavy site that was merely sluggish becomes unusable. This is one of several reasons page weight is worth taking seriously.
- Say what your load shedding position is. If you have an inverter or generator and stay open, that is a competitive advantage and it should be on your homepage. Customers actively search for businesses that stay open.
The one real risk: self-hosting
There is a version of this where load shedding genuinely does take your site down, and that is if the site is hosted on a machine at your premises. This is rare but not unheard of, usually a legacy setup from an in-house IT person years ago.
If your website runs on a server in your office, load shedding takes it offline every single time, along with your email. Move it to proper hosting. It will be cheaper, faster and permanently online.

Keeping the business running, not just the website
A few things worth having in place, none of them website-related:
- A small UPS on your router. An inexpensive one keeps your fibre connection alive for a couple of hours, which means you can still work and still reply.
- Data on your phone as a fallback, with hotspot ready.
- A card machine that works on mobile data, so you can still take payment when the wifi is down.
- Your schedule on your phone. Knowing when you are next dark lets you plan the day around it rather than being surprised.
Turn it into an advantage
Here is the part most businesses miss. During an outage, your customers are sitting in the dark on their phones with nothing to do. Traffic to local business websites does not fall during load shedding - for some businesses it rises.
If your site answers their question, takes their booking or lets them place an order for tomorrow, you capture business your competitors are missing because their phone is unanswered and their site says nothing useful.
The businesses that handle load shedding best are not the ones with the biggest generators. They are the ones whose customers can still get what they need without speaking to anyone.
